"Jeremy Vine on 5 talking about how we can remember the old fella... ideas so far

1, A Sir Tom Bank Holiday
2. A statue next to Nelson Column
3. Rename Wembley stadium the Sir Tom Stadium"

How about a Major Tom UK space rocket? Will take 100 years to get anywhere. Only KIDDING!

Suggestion 1 is SO British! Let's remember the heroics of someone else by having a fucking day off! Jesus wept.

Bolt, not really.

Your favourite club seem to be very well regarded with traditional supporters of all clubs, just not with the media types or the new plastic fans that the rest of our clubs seem to be enamoured with.

It sells advertising, government messages and keeps them nicely in power.

Our footballers are taking the knee albeit briefly before kick off. The racism aimed in the UK at black players means the job of eradication is far from done.

Long may players demonstrate against racism.

The double edged sword of the interconnected, information age.

A very decent, humble bloke who you could not fail to respect for his WWII exploits and doing his bit for the pandemic.

As mentioned, on one hand the media gets the 30 million raised but on the other we have every talking head and Z-list celebrity joining in the crocodile tears emotion ride. All started with Diana at the dawn of the internet/information revolution.

The upside of the old 4 or 5 newspapers and 3/4 TV channels days, was more fact based reporting ( where the reporter/journo did not have self promotion and celebrity as their priority). You did not have news being pushed into your nogin 24 hours a day which leads to minute dissection of everything and the injection of opinion and fabrication at every turn. There are so media outlets, channels competing for attention that sensationalism is standard now too just to try and get your attention.

Of course there is the counter argument that in those simple times we were blissfully ignorant or easily controlled through national TV audiences and newspaper readership where corporations and their governments servants could feed us what they wanted us to know or not know.

Decent education and intelligence or dare I say experience via age is needed to sift through the news sewage to find the facts. Not sure what is best sometimes. One thing I have seen is the rise of a narcissistic culture in the UK that resembles the States since the 80s. Everyone's got an opinion ( thats fine ) but many want to impose it on others and their weak psyche does not allow them to be wrong, they are not willing to be wrong and hence open mindedness and dialogue and listening to others is now largely a thing of the past.

Ho hum. Enough of my nostalgic , philosophical ramblings. You cvnts!

daveyg - A difference of opinion. You say lack of respect for me, I say lack of perspective for you.

I'll try not to lose sleep over it, if you promise to too.

If it wasn't for the media then the £30m would of NOT been raised end of . The village he lived in would not have raised that amount.
I totally get the media over doing it but like I said what the hell.
Still a lack of respect.

No football clubs paid tribute to Tom last night, but they all still take the knee to a career criminal who died 4,000 miles away.

Oh, hang on, apparently one club did pay tribute to him last night......

It's probably going to open a can or worms now, with people (with camera phones, no doubt) forcing their way into hospital or homes into see their parents.

Johnson, When we had our baby, they'd literally just changed the rules from birthing partners not being allowed to be there at the births, which again was absolutely disgusting it was there in the first place.

Few friends had babies during the first lockdown who wasn't allowed to be there when their kids were born. Fucking disguting.

Percy, thanks mate. Was absolutely awful, my grandad was in pieces. The rule shouldn't be there, if masks work why can't loved ones be there? Yet, I've had a plumber around today to do some work on our bathroom, makes no sense.

Re: Captain Moore has passed
He was in palliative care at a home wasn't he and visiting is dependent on local homes et al isn't it as guidelines have started to relax.

Same with maternity stuff isn't it? The guidance has changed but still some trusts refuse to change and some have adapted.

That's horrible mate I feel for you and your family.
Would just like somebody to tell me how they can justify visits for some and not others.

Percy, this has been a massive debate.

My uncle sadly died back in October, he was left to die along and my 90 yr old grandad couldn't even say goodbye to his son.

The whole rule of people not being allowed to be at the bedside of their loved ones dying for me is a disgrace.

Percy Dalton 1:09 Wed Feb 3
Re: Captain Moore has passed
On another note don't know if it's been mentioned.
How the fuck was his family allowed to visit him in hospital.
I haven't seen my kids for months as I'm at that so called vulnerable age.
Poor old boy didn't deserve to have a daughter exploiting him left right and centre.

Eggsactly.

Turning off doesn't discourage anyone from going WAY OVER THE TOP and slowly turning making me want to suffocate it as a result.

When I first saw coverage: Pride and respect.

When I saw how much money raised: Overwhelmed and felt a pang of love that was previously reserved for my own Granddad.

When he had a fly past: Wonderful, British personified.

When he put a single out: *Wince*

When he got promoted: Hmm Army publicity stunt? ok MPI you are being cynical

When he got a knighthood: Ok. Fine. its good for old people to feel recognised...But I cannot see my Nan at the moment so why am I seeing so much of this guy? Oh I get it, daughter works in PR.

Massive over hype and coverage today, including scenes of him doing his thing in the garden: OH SHUFFLE FASTER YOU LAZY OL' CUNT.

Familiarity and over exposure diminishes emotion in me and breeds contempt. I cant help it.

One last thing, people feel part of his journey since it was first mentioned about how he's been doing his laps, he's caught the hearts of many people, including mine.

It's not his fault the media are going fucking mental over it.

FO, I think the fact is, the blokes 100 (ONE HUNDRED) years old, and managed to walk all that way. It's not detracting from what anyone else has done, far from it.

He has been an inspiration to many people who are disabled, urging them to get up and walk, his outlook on life was refreshing and constantly positive, there's been spin off stories, 1 in particular a young child with issues with his legs, who using a stroller like Tom has walked miles for charity, this MAY not have happened if it wasn't for tom.

The only negative, was his duet with Michael Fucking Ball.

Had the radio on in the car, and Radio 2 were going way OTT about it.

I did what White Pony has suggested and turned it over to some music.

I was then faced with a bus coming the opposite direction with "Thanks Sir Tom" on it's matrix display.
